The First Prince’s Tale

The first Prince chose to ride out alone, with only a sack of gold and his good horse for company. He saluted his father farewell, set out at dawn, and he traveled East, into the rising sun. His horse was gaily decked, with bells on the harness that tinkled brightly in the warm summer sun. It was in his mind that Wisdom was the most precious thing, and so he went out to seek it.

The first Prince traveled far and wide, over mountains and meadows, and through strange and distant lands. Everywhere he went, he met with the wisest men wherever he found them. He visited great palaces and fabled libraries. He spoke with the wisest of men at courts and universities, and he learned from them the secrets of nations and science, but he did not find what he sought.

So then he searched out cathedrals and traveled to monasteries in high and secret places. He spoke with grand high priests from the cathedrals and humble monks and men whose wisdom and goodness and truth shone from them like the light of a thousand stars. He humbled himself before them, and sat at their feet that he might learn from them. And learn he did, so his heart was full of the truth of what they told him.

Thus passed the summer and autumn, but still the Prince did not find what he sought.

Then the Prince visited poor and rude villages, and spoke with the wise men he found there: humble priests and shepherds, farmers who lived close to the rhythms of the earth, and he spoke with them and learned from them the secrets of the earth.
